Investigative Artist and Memetic Engineer
Joseph Barrows is a new media artist investigating the way we treat life.
"artificial life is not a theoretical science - we have created life forms from scratch and they live amongst us already, indeed, as many of the sci-fi tales have warned - they have started to become the dominant species"
Joseph isn't speaking of genetically engineered microbes, or nanobots, or even computer virii; but of the corporation.
"the corporation is a construct of information and law; it has no static physical presence (it can adopt and shed corporeal presence as needed). They can move between legal environments as needed (such as better tax havens, or less restrictive employment requirements)."
But he is not an anarchist or anti-corporation campaigner.
"I dont think we should rid the world of corporations - group activity is quite natural (and indeed, group mind is quite a reasonable evolution to achieve higher wisdom) I do think we need to urgently reform the corporate entity - googles "dont do evil" is exactly the sort of thing that needs to be in the preamble of every corporate constituition, a much more thorough approach would be Isaac Asimov's Laws of Robotics"
Reformation of the wayward corporation is not Joseph's sole interest - he is also interested in way to think about new life forms creatively.
